A former musician...
During his college years, Gary was a musician who played in several university bands and in a popular beach music band. The beach music band played at numerous clubs and universities in North Carolina and Virginia and occasionally accompanied popular Motown recording artists on tour in the region (i.e., Martha & the Vandellas, Major Lance, Rufus Thomas, etc.). In recent years, the band was recognized as one of the early bands of modern day Beach Music in the book, The Heeey Baby Days of Beach Music (Stories and Remembrances of a Southern Music Genre) by Greg Haynes.
